The Ichegera Island Lodgenyiragongo
This is one of the kind and it’s an excellent tented camp that sits on the exposed ridge that warped the volcanic caldera in the middle of Lake Kivu. The minority of the safari style meru tents lie on the black sandy shores with the small verandas under the canvas. Just here, you can sit and admire the view or watch the birds as well as the butterflies amongst the trees that will help provide the shade and the privacy. Inside the tents, you will find the simple and nice clean with the flushing loos, the bucket showers and the generator that gives power.
Like in many of the safari camps, the meals are served in the main mess tent. There is also a light and airy canvas room that is near by the wooden decking beyond which lies the beach. At night, the camp comes into its own and the hurricane lamps added to the atmosphere. The campfire along the beach is the best place to view the Nyiragongo volcano in the distance as well as the full moon that is reflected in the lake.
This Island camp is also an outlier from other camps in Virunga National park, and it’s a flooded caldera which is off the northern shores of Lake Kivu and this is a private island which is promoted as the best way to escape the bustle and hustle of Goma or to rest after climbing the Nyiragongo volcano.
The camp offers beautiful views of the lake and over four volcanoes. On some nights, the Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira volcanoes give the drama by turning the sky red with the glowing lava. There is also variety of birdlife on the island, including the confiding. For anyone who wants to do more than and put the feet so that you can swim in the bay and there is also kayas that is available for use. The area is in front of the camp and is well protected from the rudiments and is mill pond calm, while the open lake can get sporty. This camp was opened in mid-2015 and it has well-appointed eight tents as well as furnishings that remain in the mint condition.
